Have you heard of Ebates?
If not, it is this amazing site that allows you to earn cash back on lots of stuff you purchase online and they have even added some in store offers more recently that can help you earn cash back when shopping offline too! You know those things you hear about and they sound great but then you don’t bother signing up for them and then one day you finally do and then it is so great that you wished you would have signed up earlier? Well my friends, Ebates is one of those things for me. I just signed up at the beginning of November and it has already been a game changer. Seriously, if you haven’t already signed up, sign up now before you go any farther. It is beyond simple and the cash back can really add up fast. Even better, right now they are offering a $10 bonus once you spend $25 which is super easy with all of the gift purchases you will be making anyway this time of year. Don’t worry, I’ll wait until you get back :). All set? Then let’s get to the tips:
1. Download the app
This is so important!! You absolutely need to download the app immediately. Then, ANYTIME you are thinking about buying ANYTHING online, you first go to the app and see if Ebates has an offer. This is critical because in order to earn the cash back you must go through Ebates. They will not be able to credit you for retroactive purchases. If you always start with Ebates there is no chance of forgetting and missing out on the cash back.
2. Install the Ebates extension for your internet browser
Similar to downloading the app, I also highly recommend you download the Ebates browser extension on any laptop/desktop computer you could possibly make purchases from. The goal here is to save you from forgetting to use Ebates and make it super easy for you to earn cash back on everything you can. The browser extension will let you know if the site you’re on offers a cash back bonus. You just click the “Activate” button and then you’re good to go. Easy peasy right?
3. Link your credit card for in store purchases
I love that Ebates offers cash back for in store purchases from some retailers. In order to qualify fo these you are going to need to link your credit card so that Ebates will be able to verify your purchase. Keep in mind, that you also need to review the specific process for each retailer in the app. Most of the time you will also need to give them a code to scan when you are checking out. Again that is so Ebates can verify the purchase and give you the cash back you earned.
We used this for the first time yesterday with Best Buy. My husband wanted to buy the new iPad Pro but he wanted to go to the physical store so he could have them price match a $150 discount another store was offering (did you know Best Buy price matches? It’s true!!! They will price match anything that is in stock at the store as long as it is offered by a major competitor like Amazon, Target, MicroCenter, etc.)
4. Don’t default to Amazon
Ugh! This one is the toughest for me. After signing up for Amazon Mom (I think it’s called Amazon Family now) which has saved me a ton of money on diapers, wipes and other baby essentials over the years I have gotten into the habit of just going to the Amazon app anytime I need to purchase something but if you go to Ebates first you might be able to save yourself some money AND earn cash back (double win!) For example, just last week I wanted to order my older daughter a new leotard for ballet. I had already saved one to her Amazon Wishlist but just before I clicked Purchase – I decided to pop over to my Ebates App and see if there were any stores having sales first. There are a ton of stores in Ebates so it can be a pain to try to figure out all of the stores to check for leotards… instead just search for the item you are looking for and any store that have the item will appear in the search results. In this case, I found that Danskin.com was offering 10% cash back plus a huge % off – it was something like 40% off which is such a great deal that I was able to get her a new leotard, leg warmers AND a sweatshirt for less than what I would have paid for the leotard on Amazon. Amazing right? You won’t always be able to find what you are looking for but it always pays to double check.
5. Stack cash back by using a rewards credit card
This is one of the best things about Ebates. If you have a credit card that gives you rewards, you are still earning those rewards in addition to the Ebates cash back. This can really add up! I have had the Chase Freedom card for years which I love. I earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter and unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases. If you are interested in checking it out, they are currently offering a $150 bonus after your first $500 in purchases in the first three months and 0% interest for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers so it is a really good deal. Just make sure that you pay your credit card in full each month! Paying interest on your purchases will quickly erase any cash back you earn with the credit card and Ebates. If you don’t think you can pay it in full each month then I would recommend you stick with a debit card or cash. You don’t want to get yourself into debt.
6. Score an even better deal by stacking coupon codes.
As I mentioned above in #4 – you can use Ebates with other coupon and promo codes. Even better Ebates will tell you if there are current active promos for you to take advantage of! This again means you are stacking savings, on savings! Such a great deal. I will give you a word of warning to keep an eye on the promos because I did have an issue when I was shopping on Kohls where the applied Ebates promos were not as good as the two promos that the Kohls site suggested. I just deleted the Ebates promos and added the promos suggested by the Kohls site back to my cart before I finished checking out.
